Somali expertise

What makes Somali translation different

Somali has features that trip up general agencies and machine translation. These are the ones that matter most on official paperwork.

Names follow the lineage, not a surname

A Somali name is usually a given name followed by the father's given name and the grandfather's given name, with no family surname. Forms that ask for a first and last name force a choice, so we render every name exactly as it appears on the passport or existing immigration record, and flag any mismatch before delivery.

Somali spelling differs from passport spelling

Somali orthography writes Maxamed, Cabdi and Faadumo, while the same people often hold documents spelled Mohamed, Abdi and Fadumo. The letters x, c and q represent sounds English does not have. We keep the official spelling for names and use correct Somali spelling in running text.

Maxaa Tiri and Maay

Maxaa Tiri is the standard variety used in official documents, broadcasting and most writing. Maay is spoken across southern Somalia and differs enough that speakers can struggle to follow each other. Interpreters are matched to the variety the person actually speaks, and we ask before we book.

Records in more than one language

Somali has been written in the Latin alphabet since 1972. Older records, and many documents issued in the region, may be in Arabic, Italian or English, or combine several. We identify every language on the page and translate all of it, including stamps and handwritten notes.

Somali translation questions

Questions about Somali translation

Do you translate both Maxaa Tiri and Maay?

Yes. Most written documents are in Maxaa Tiri, the standard variety, and we translate those as written. For interpretation and for recordings we match the linguist to the variety spoken. If you are not sure which one a person speaks, tell us their home region and we will confirm before booking.

My name is spelled differently on different documents. What will you use?

We follow the spelling on your passport or on your existing immigration record, because that is what the authority will compare against. If the source document spells a name differently, we keep the official spelling and add a translator's note so the difference is explained rather than hidden.

Will USCIS accept your Somali certified translation?

Our certified translations include a signed statement confirming the translation is complete and accurate and that the translator is competent in Somali and English, which is what USCIS asks for. They carry our USCIS acceptance guarantee. See our guide to certified translation for USCIS for the details.

My document is in Arabic and Somali. Can you translate both?

Yes. Many records issued in the region combine Somali with Arabic, Italian or English. We translate every language on the page into English in one certified translation, including stamps and handwritten annotations.

Can you translate English documents into Somali?

Yes. We translate patient information, school letters, legal notices and public materials into natural Somali that readers understand, reviewed by a second Somali linguist before delivery.
